Calvary Love
Poems by Amy Carmichael
I’ve always loved Amy Carmichael. Her life and faith are so encouraging, and she is a great example of a strong Christian woman.
If you don’t know, Amy Carmichael was an Irish missionary who worked fo fifty-six years in India and started a ministry for children. She was a mother to the motherless and would rescue girls from the Hindu temples, where they were sold and often forced into prostitution.
Amy Carmichael had a strong faith, and her poems demonstrate this.
Today, I want to share with you four poems written by Amy Carmichael. I pray that they encourage and convict you, as they do me.
If monotony tries me, and I cannot
stand drudgery;
if stupid people fret me and little
ruffles set me on edge;
if I make much of the trifles of life,
then I know nothing of Calvary love.
If I am inconsiderate about the comfort
of others,
or their feelings,
or even of their little weaknesses;
if I am carelss about their little
hurts and miss oportunities to smooth their way;
if i make the sweet running of
household wheels more difficult
to accomplish,
then I know nothinf of Calvary love.
If I have not compassion of my
fellow-servant,
even as my Lord had pity on me,
then I know nothing of Calvary love.
If I do not feel far more for the grieved
Saviour than for my worried self
when troublesome things occur,
then I know nothing of Calvary love.
Indeed, Calvary love is an amazing thing. Sometimes, I believe, we don’t treasure it enough. So, I encourage you throughout this week to think about what Calvary love really is.
How should the understanding of Calvary love affect how we live?
